Case Study: Kola Beach Resort, Kenya

27 Feb 2016
self catering villas in malindi
  • Installing the BigBoost mobile signal repeater system.
  • Location: Kola Beach Resort, Mambrui, Malindi, Kenya.

Preconditions:

There are 3 local mobile operators in Kenya:

  • Safaricom,
  • Airtel,
  • and Telkom Kenya.

The mobile signal from these operators in the Kola Beach Resort was very weak,  if not almost non-existent, and this resulted in poor phone call quality.

Technical Computer Area (TCA) contacted NimWave(Italian consultants/ installers) for advice to find the best solution to this problem.

The best solution identified was the BigBoost, the mobile signal amplifier designed by StellaDoradus to revive weak mobile signal up to 1 km away.

The BigBoost system

Kenyan resort

Step 1 – Connecting the outdoor antenna to the Stellahome repeater:

The first stage of the installation  is to find the best location in which to place the main antenna (this antenna points at the nearest mobile tower).  The goal here is to get the best signal while at the same time not to create interference with the second stage antennas that are installed within the area of Kola Beach Resort.

This  main antenna was installed on a high pole located in the southern edge of the complex, above of reception area. This was found to be the best location for the in-coming signal from all mobile operators.

A 20 meter cable was connected from this antenna to inside the building where the StellaHome repeater  was located.

Then the outdoor antenna was carefully aligned to achieve maximum signal strength, as per the LED indicator  on the repeater.

Channel 2100Mhz and 1800Mhz showed good signal strength. Channel 900Mhz showed no signal strength at all.  As we only needed the 1800Mhz channel, this was a satisfactory result.

Step 2 – Connecting up the BigBoost and 2 antennas

From the Stellahome repeater, a 30 meter cable was installed to the BigBoost. Two internal antennas were then attached to the BigBoost using a splitter.  One antenna covered the pool area. The other antenna covered an apartment in the north of the resort. The placement of these antennas was carefully selected so as not to create feedback with the main antenna. A general rule was applied to make sure these antennas were 180 DEG with respect to the main antenna.

The signal strengths were measured – full signal on 2100Mhz and good signal on 1800Mhz.

Conclusion:

Thanks to this amplification system it is now possible to makes calls from both the main pool area and from the apartment.

The owner of the Kola Beach Resort was finally happy to be able to offer his guests the service that mobile operators could not guarantee him.
